<Q: Please elaborate on your language policy.> Tone of voice and design of voluntary logos to highlight sustainability credentials of the packaging component i.e. min 50% recycled plastic, must adhere to brand values and must be easy to understand and intuitive for customers
<Q: What makes a good packaging label? What information should be prioritised?> Simple, honest, easy to understand so customers do the right thing
<Q: Can you describe your approach, or the approach of your organisation, to supporting/point-of-sale information with regard to plastic packaging?> Unfortunately no clear approach. Looking into it now
<Q: Are there any examples of labelling that you are especially proud of? If you aren't involved in design, please tell us about some packaging/labelling that you especially like, and why.> Instigating the development and use of roundels at front of pack to highlight the sustainability credentials and use of correct [recycling] logos across all lines to engage and communicate with customers. Not revolutionary, but focus on packaging just starting and loads to do...
<Q: What information would you wish to be included on packaging labels, if e.g. space and branding weren't an issue?> I would love a carbon traffic light system for both product and packaging to give customers the choice. A huge challenge! However, I would be happy with clear and honest source information i.e. recycled content, material etc...where relevant and recycling logos so customers can dispose of it correctly.
<Q: Is there anything that you purposely avoid including on packaging labels?> Language that can add further confusion i.e. biodegradable as an example. No greenwashing please!
<Q: What do you most want consumers to take away from the text on packaging labels? Is there any messaging that you feel isn't landing with consumers?> Unfortunately packaging is often misunderstood and customers find it difficult to know how to dispose of it correctly. Mandatory recycling logos common to all producers will be key to ensure customers do the right thing and close the circle
<Q: Do you have any other thoughts or comments you would like to share?> Labelling must be supported with education campaigns to drive the correct customer behaviour - and those must be on-going to continually drip feed the message
